The handle is made of pointed horn. This is extracted from the tip of a cow horn. In terms of colour, this material can be black to almost beige-brownish. It is a natural product so this varies per knife, Which makes every knife a unique masterpiece. On the back of the handle, exactly above the head, you will find the characteristic Laguiole bee. The side of the handle is enhanced with the characteristic Laguiole shepherd’s cross. The set comes in a luxurious storage box.
## The origin of Laguiole knives
The production of the “Laguiole knives” as we know them, started in the early 19th century. The first knives appeared in 1829, probably inspired by the southern Spanish *Navaja*. The knives were originally intended primarily for farmers and shepherds from the region(hence the cross on the handle) Afterwards, the knife was further developed and wine openers with corkscrews were created as well.
After the First World War, almost all French knife production moved to Thiers, which is still the capital city of knives in France today. Some renowned Laguiole producers relocated. In the 1980s, the Forge de Laguiole brand was founded in the small village of Laguiole and still there till this day. For some, Forge de Laguiole is, therefore, the only “real” Laguiole brand.
